Although I have a mill, I came across an inexpensive Atlas milling attachment and bought it for my 11" Logan for basically the same reason. I had to make the necessary plug to attach it to the cross slide, but otherwise the 10"12" is an excellent fit on my lathe (which has a height from the cross slide, with the compound removed, to the centerline of the spindle 3").

If you can only afford or fit one machine tool, get a lathe. You can mill on a lathe, either in a chuck, with an endmill in a chuck, or with a vertical milling attachment. But it is very hard to turn things in a mill. Mills are generally for square stuff, although some folks do some amazing round work on them! This is a vertical milling attachment.

Following on from my post re the small lathes, I believe I will go down the H F AL51G road. The Sieg looks great and the power crossfeed would be great to have as well. I did buy a Sieg mill from Ausee last week, delivered on time, as advertised. They were easy to deal with, accurate delivery etc. The lathe is simply outside my price frame.

Its fine for most turning becuase the load is downwards. Any milling it will rotate. Dont look for a vertical slide, instead look for small lathe cross slide. Drummonds and myfords are a good size. Example of mine. Wm240 lathe with 50mm facemill. Top slide will be rubbish not enough travel and too small.
